What does ‘Rhododendron’ Mean?

Rhododendron trees or shrubs are known to be extremely hardy, and they’ve been grown as a solid part of our gardens since the 1500s.
They provide a lot of color and drama to any garden, and come in a huge range of colors, including red, white, pink, purple, yellow, and orange. These lovely plants even produce around five blooms per flower bud, just to give you an idea of their prolific flowering habit.
What do Rhododendron Flowers Represent?
Rhododendron flowers have a myriad of meanings.
In the Victorian language of flowers, the rhododendron has one of the most curious meanings of all: it’s a warning, telling the recipient that the sender is dangerous!
This probably stems from the way that rhododendrons have been used as weapons throughout history.
In the time of Mithridates VI, who was the king of Pontus, a Roman army from Pompey the Great was sent to conquer his lands. Well, Mithridates VI wasn’t about to stand for that.
Luckily, he was a great experimentalist in the world of natural poisons. He had honeycombs placed along the roadsides where he knew this army would travel.
Not just any honeycomb, but those made from honeybees which took their nectar from the rhododendron.
As the plant’s nectar is extremely poisonous, it also made a toxic and tempting trap in the form of honey. People know it as ‘mad honey’, for the way it affects the mind and the body.
This honey causes hallucinations, blurred vision, fainting, drunkenness, and a whole host of other problems. In some cases, it can even be the cause of death.
The Roman army, tired from their hard journey, fell upon the honey, leaving them extremely vulnerable. Mithridates VI’s army obliterated them.
While this is a very dark and morbid meaning behind this flower, this is not the only thing that the rhododendron means.

It largely depends on the color of the flower as to what it represents.
